to present 'The Foreigner' By MICHAEL
BOYLAN If someone couldn't understand you, there would be no harm in revealing your deepest secrets. That is what many of the characters in Larry Shue's "The Foreigner" think, when they are told that a man staying by the fishing lodge is a foreigner. They are wrong, of course; the man is actually a shy science fiction editor who has just had the bottom of his life fall out. Originally produced by Newnan Community Theatre in 1987, "The Foreigner" tells the story of Charlie and his friend Froggy going on a brief vacation to a fishing lodge in Georgia. When Froggy has to go off to Fort Benning and Charlie must stay by himself, Froggy tells the people at the lodge that the man is a foreigner, thinking they will leave him alone. That doesn't happen. A former debutante reveals that she is miserable, despite her impending marriage to a fine upstanding preacher. She was left a hefty inheritance from her parents but she has to deal with her idiot brother who can't seem to do anything right. Charlie eventually saves that day, even in the face of a vicious racist named Owen. Tony Daniel, who played the role in 1987, reprises his role for this performance. "The Foreigner" will be presented at Newnan Community Theatre Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 3. Curtain is at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors and students. For information, call 770-683-NCTC or visit www.newnantheatre.com. |
