Georgia Dance Theatre wants you to get "In the Spirit of Dance."

The nonprofit performing arts company, based out of the Georgia Academy of Dance, will perform a spring concert Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, at Starr's Mill High School.

The concert, titled "In the Spirit of Dance," will feature a variety of styles including modern, ballet, jazz and liturgical dance. The music will range from Tina Turner to Peter Gabriel to hard rockin' sounds of the 1970s and '80s and a selection from George Balanchine's "Jewels."

The first act of "Les Sylphides," a famous Russian ballet, will be restaged for this production by ballet master Ramazan Bapov. Bapov was a 15-year principal dancer with the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and silver medalist to Mikhail Baryshnikov in the International Ballet Competition of Bulgaria.

Georgia Dance Theatre provides more than 30 scholarship members the opportunity to train with the most reputable and professional educators in fine arts, like Bapov.

Georgia Dance Theatre employs professional and amateur dancers who are all gifted in many different styles of dance. The professional company, which is the only one in surrounding local counties, has been in existence since 1997 and is currently seven members strong.

Among its other credits, the company has received grants from the Fayette County Endowment Committee for the Cultural Arts and support from Partners in the Arts. The troupe has had a number of sold out performances and in return provides support to the Newnan Auditorium Restoration project, Starr's Mill Auditorium, Christian City and other local schools and charities.

"In The Spirit of Dance" will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. To learn more about the show or the Georgia Academy of Dance, call 770-631-3128.
