The area wrestling meets were held over the weekend and many of the local wrestlers did well enough to advance to the state meet. Starr's Mill and East Coweta will be sending their entire squads to compete for the title, while other schools will send wrestlers seeking individual glory.

The Panthers finished the 4-AAAAA area meet in first place with 265 points, while East Coweta placed fourth, Fayette County placed seventh and McIntosh finished 10th. The Panthers had five individual champions, four second-place finishers and two third-place finishers in the meet.

Placing first were Lee Gresham at 112, Ariston Bowers at 152, Christopher Coleman at 160, Matt Fuhrman at 171 and Tony Tofanelli at 215. Bowers was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. The second-place finishers were Kevin Trickey at 119, Brian Kyser at 135, Danny Davidson at 140, and Jason Kiefer at 145. Tyler Kourajian placed third at 103 while Rusty Lyle placed third at 189.

East Coweta had one individual champion, Dane Lemly at 135, one second-place finisher, Hawk Cochran at 152, one third-place finisher, Alex Freeman at 160, and three fourth-place finishers Greg Smith at 145, Alex Rogers at 215, and Aaron Andrews at 171.

McIntosh and Fayette County High School had a few top-four finishers as well. McIntosh's Daniel Graham placed second at 112, while Michael Lee finished fourth at 160. Stephen McElrath placed fourth at 112 for Fayette County and Paul Gable placed fourth at 135. McIntosh will send three alternates to the meet: Mike Thompson, Justin Edwards and Brad Graham. Fayette County will send four alternates: James Bouie, Gareth Joseph, Mat Kellerman and Joe Strickland.

The state meet will be held at the Georgia Agricenter In Perry. To get to Perry, take I-75 to Exit 135 and turn left. Go to first traffic light (General Courtney Hodges Blvd.) and turn right. The welcome center is on the right.

Sandy Creek hosted the 4-AAAA area meet Saturday. Woodward Academy was the eventual champion scoring 282 points, while Sandy Creek finished eighth with 47.5 points. The Patriots will send two wrestlers to the upcoming state meet as second place finishers and two will attend as alternates. The second place finishers were John Auers at 140 and Kedric Golston at 275. The two alternates are Mark Smith at 125 and Brandon McDowell at 171.

The AAAA state meet will be held at the Forum in Rome this Friday and Saturday. From Atlanta take I 75 North to Exit 290 at Cartersville, GA Hwy 20 to US Hwy 411 South, a four lane road. This gets confusing if you do not watch. Rome is north of Cartersville, but you take Hwy 411 South to Rome from Cartersville. Exit 306, Adairsville travel west on Hwy 140 to Hwy 53, then west or left on to Hwy 53 to Rome.
