What does the phrase "I'm gonna live forever" mean to you?

If you were over the age of 8 and not living in a cave in the 1980s, you're probably thinking "Fame" and, for the purposes of this article, you are correct.

"Fame" began as a smash hit motion picture, then became a television program, and now it is a musical. The motion picture garnered four Academy Award nominations and the television show was nominated for numerous Emmys during its six years on network television.

"Fame" will be presented at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta through Feb. 11.

Set in the 1980s, "Fame" focuses on the hopes and dreams of a group of students attending New York's High School for Performing Arts on West 46th Street. The musical chronicles their four-year odyssey from audition to graduation at the school. The mix of strongly motivated students rich and poor, black and white give the story its passion and dramatic tension.

The idea for "Fame" was David DeSilva's. He strongly believed in magnet schools like the High School of Performing Arts, now known as Fiorello Laguardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. DeSilva had a background in education.

"I always believed that in an ideal democratic society, having the opportunity to get out of your neighborhood or ghetto and go to a specialized school to study something you're good at, be it computer science or the performing arts, offers the greatest preparation for the competitive world we live in," said DeSilva.

"Fame" is an energetic and passion-filled show that features more than 30 performers. The people that have brought "Fame - The Musical" to life have extensive backgrounds in theater and film and have garnered worldwide acclaim and recognition. Lyricist Jacques Levy and composer Steve Margoshes have four nominations between them for their work on "Oh!Calcutta" and "The Who's Tommy" respectively.

The show will be presented at 8 p.m. through Saturday and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range in price from $17.50-$40 and can be purchased at the Fox Theatre Box Office, any Ticketmaster outlet or by calling 404-817-8700.
