Lady Lakers lose to Georgia College while men's team nabs a win The Clayton College & State University women's basketball team dropped its ninth Peach Belt Conference game of the season, falling to Georgia College & State University 78-52 last Saturday. The Lady Lakers trailed 39-25 at halftime and by as many as 22 points earlier in the second half but did go on a 10-0 second half run, capped on a three-point play by freshman Tonne'y Mason. Her free throw cut the deficit to 12 points, 49-37, with 13:04 remaining in the game, but Georgia College went on a run of its own, outscoring the Lady Lakers 9-0 in the next three minutes to take control of the game. Freshman guard Amber Wood led the Lady Laker offensive attack with 12 points, hitting 5-of-12 from the field and 2-of-6 from 3-point territory. Freshman guards Allyson Rutledge and Jo Kimbrel chipped in nine and eight points, respectively. Shooting a season-high 60 percent from the field, the Clayton College & State University Laker basketball team posted its fourth conference victory of the season Saturday, defeating Georgia College & State University 74-63. Leading 37-34 at halftime, the Lakers outscored the Bobcats 37-29, shooting a sizzling 65 percent (13-for-20) in the second half. Senior Marlin Capers led the offensive attack for the Lakers scoring a season-high 21 points, hitting 10-of-13 shots from the field and 1-of-3 free throws. The win marks CCSU's second of the season over Georgia College, the Lakers defeated the Bobcats 58-54 in a Peach Belt Conference matchup earlier this season in Milledgeville. Georgia College took a 3-point lead, 50-47, at the 11:25 mark of the second half on a basket by freshman Daryl Ruffus only to have the Lakers go on a 18-0 run over the next six minutes to take control of the game. Capers hit a basket with 5:15 remaining in the game to give the Lakers a 65-50 lead. Behind Capers' 21-point and six-rebound performance, junior Kareen Harris scored 19 points. He also had five rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Jerry Johnson scored 11 points, while junior guard Charlie Frazier, Jr. finished with nine points and five assists. Up next, Clayton State will host Columbus State University today. The Lady Lakers will play at 5:30 p.m., while the men's team will play at 7:30 p.m.
