Sandy Creek cheerleaders win first state title in school history By MICHAEL BOYLAN Sandy Creek High School captured its first state championship ever over the weekend as the cheerleading team won the AAAA crown in Savannah. The team, coached by Jody Griffin, completed an undefeated season at the state meet. They won two invitationals during the season at Columbus State University and at Loganville High School. It was at the Columbus State Invitational that the team won the trophy for Grand Champion. They won the AAAA class but also defeated top programs from other classifications. They tied the McIntosh High School cheerleaders in that meet. Sandy Creek also won the 4-AAAA regional championship this year. The team won the 4-AAA region last year but found both classifications to be full of stiff competition. In competition, each team is given two minutes and 30 seconds to perform a series. Half of that time is with music, while the other half is without. The teams are judged on tumbling, stunting, precision and their command of fundamentals. Each judge can award up to 100 points. The season starts each summer with a camp and then the competition team goes to stunt and tumble camp. It is there that the routine begins to form. It starts small and grows during the season as things are added to it. This team then performs during the football season and begins their competitive season in December. "The girls' performance was great but their sportsmanship was even better," said Coach Griffin. "It was an honor to work with them this season." There were eight seniors on this year's squad, including captain Heather Bartlett and co-captain Cerrone Coker. The other co-captain was junior Jennifer Worsham. Though the team will lose many members to graduation, there is asloa solid foundation on freshman and sophomores on the team that should keep them in the hunt to defend their title.
