Tuesday night's basketball action was filled with many ups and downs for the local teams. Some losing streaks mercifully came to an end, while other teams started losing trends.

The Starr's Mill boys ended a six-game losing skid by defeating Newnan 60-59. The Panthers jumped out to an 11-0 lead on the strength of Brett Zondervan's three three-pointers and a basket from Donny Lampen. Starr's Mill was up 21-10 at the end of the first quarter and 34-29 at the half.

Newnan closed the gap to 44-42 by the end of the third quarter but Lampen scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Panthers hang on for the win. Lampen finished with 32 points and five blocks, while Zondervan finished with nine points.

The Lady Panthers lost a close game to the Lady Cougars, falling 58-56. Alison Horne led the team in scoring with 20 points. Their overall record is now 15-5. Starr's Mill will travel to Jonesboro to take on the Cardinals tonight.

To get to Jonesboro High School, take Ga. Highway 54 into Jonesboro and turn right on Ga. Highway 138, going east. Cross the railroad tracks and take the first left. The school is about a quarter-mile down the road on the right.

The McIntosh Chiefs lost two games in a row for the first time this season on Tuesday night as they fell to North Clayton, 70-46. The Chiefs were down 17-10 after the first quarter and only scored five points in the second quarter, leading to a 34-15 deficit at the half. North Clayton expanded their lead to 53-33 heading into the fourth quarter and held on to the lead. Josh Burr led the Chiefs in scoring with 19 points while Drew Hartley added 11 points. McIntosh is 6-6 in the region with three games left.

The Lady Chiefs fell to North Clayton, 46-41. McIntosh led 8-7 after the first quarter and 17-15 at the half, but the Lady Eagles took a 27-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter. McIntosh rallied and led for awhile but North Clayton tied the game at 34, sending it into overtime, where they outscored the Lady Chiefs, 12-7. Whitney Wallis led McIntosh in scoring with 12 points while Kristen Karker added nine points. McIntosh travels to Evans on Friday.

To get to Evans, take I-85 North to I-285 Exit 68. Travel on I-285 East to I-20 East. Take Exit 194, SR/383 and Dyess Parkway and turn left on to SR/383 North. The school is up ahead.

Sandy Creek faced Heritage on Tuesday night and both the boys and girls won. The Lady Patriots defeated Heritage 38-35 in a game that went back and forth. Krystal McBride netted nine points for Sandy Creek while Jessica DeMooney added eight. The Lady Patriots improved to 4-10 in the region.

The boys had an easier time with Heritage, winning 66-33. The Patriots led by 20 points after the first quarter and kept up their tough defense throughout. L.T. Lockett led the team in scoring with 26 points, while Bill Crumpler added 12 points and William Belton added 11 points. The boys improved to 10-4 in the region and 18-5 overall. Sandy Creek will play at Union Grove tonight.

To get to Union Grove High School, take I-285 to the Flat Shoals Road exit and turn right. Go 4-5 miles and turn right on Snapfinger Road/Ga. Highway 155, then go south about 10 miles to East Lake Road. Turn right and the school is on the right.

In other games tonight, Northgate will host Greenville and East Coweta will host Morrow. All games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
