Tourists
from around the Southeast flock to such shopping destinations as Chattanooga's
Warehouse Row and Atlanta's Ellsworth Industrial area.
Their main
mission: cheap women's wear and shoes.
Now, developers
in South Fulton County are pondering an idea to establish a ladies'
apparel and shoe district on Old National Highway.
During a
recent meeting on the state of development in South Fulton County, Fulton's
chief of economic development, Joseph Johnson, said that idea is one
of many efforts to revitalize the Old National Highway area.
Other ideas
for the highway include:
Conduct
a retail study of the highway in College Park and unincorporated South
Fulton County.
Develop
a business plan for the area.
Create
a strategy to development the old Kroger shopping center.
Eliminate
any opportunities for industrial zoning on the highway.
Implement
a strategy to lure hotels and hospitality facilities to the area.
Review
the ingress and egress pattern on the road and decide whether to change
access points on the highway.
The last
recommendation is the one that could cause the most debate, Johnson
said.
Instead of
having so many points of access on the road, the access points would
be dramatically cut and stores would be congregated in plaza areas.
Any of the
recommendations will be discussed at public meetings before any changes
are implemented, he added.
