Man's mortality is a common theme in literature and drama.

From the minute we take our first breath, the hourglass is turned over and our time starts to run out. But, what if Death were captured and not allowed to do his job?

That is one of the questions at the center of "On Borrowed Time," which will be presented by the Southside Theatre Guild beginning this weekend.

The story focuses on Pud, an orphaned boy who lives with Gramps and Granny. Pud idolizes Gramps and has adopted his mannerisms and speech patterns, much to the dislike of Granny. Granny sends for Aunt Demetria to correct the problem and Aunt Demetria is happy to oblige as she is eyeing the boy's inheritance.

Death then comes to Granny and Gramp's residence in the form of Mr. Brink. He is coming for Gramps but is promptly sent on his way. He returns and takes Granny instead and then makes another attempt at capturing Gramps. Mr. Brink fails again and is sent up an apple tree, where some mysterious power keeps him up there.

Gramps, who is the only one who can see Mr. Brink, is seen by the neighbors talking to a tree. Since Mr. Brink is trapped, nobody is dying and the normal life cycle is broken. In the end, everyone must confront their mortality and their fear of death.

"On Borrowed Time" will be presented Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 1-17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for children and $10 for adults. Thursday night performances are $8.
