Basketball teams perform well in big games By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starr's Mill basketball teams faced Henry County Tuesday night and the boys team lost a heartbreaker. The Panthers had a three-point lead after the first quarter and led 33-30 at the half, but Henry County, which had been surging toward the end of the second quarter, pulled ahead 43-40 at the end of the third quarter. Starr's Mill tied the game at 57 with a minute to go but then gave up a basket and a bench technical which vaulted the Warhawks ahead by six points. Gary Kubik then hit two three-pointers to tie the game once again with 25 seconds remaining. Henry County hit a basket and the Panthers turned the ball over, leading to a 67-63 Henry County win. The Panthers are now 3-6 in the region and 7-9 overall. Three Starr's Mill players were in double digits in the game Donnie Lampen scored 17 points, while Kubik hit four three-pointers and added 14 points and Che Brewer netted 10 points. Starr's Mill will play at Lovejoy tonight at 7 p.m. and at Sandy Creek tomorrow at 6 p.m.. To get to Lovejoy High School, travel on Ga. Hwy 54. toward Jonesboro, take a right on to McDonough Rd. and travel on that road until you see the high school, next to Twelve Oaks Stadium. Lovejoy High School is located at 1587 McDonough Rd. McIntosh hosted Forest Park Tuesday night and both the boys and girls basketball teams won. The Lady Chiefs won 47-27. They led 12-7 after the first quarter and 25-17 at the half. The girls then played stellar defense, limiting Forest Park to two points in the third quarter. Megan Bartels led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 12 points, while Whitney Wallis added eight and Kristen Karker added six. The boys played a great game as well. Ten people scored in the game, including Josh Burr who led the team in scoring with 34 points. The Chiefs led Forest Park by six points at the end of the first three quarters and jumped ahead by 14 points in the fourth quarter thanks to free throws. Drew Hartley contributed 15 points and Kasey Kozak added 10. The Chiefs will host Mt. Zion Friday night at 7 p.m. and North Clayton Tuesday night at 7 p.m. |
