CCSU swept by N. Florida

The Clayton College & State University women's basketball team dropped its sixth conference game of the season Saturday, falling to the University of North Florida 67-47.

North Florida jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Lady Lakers 23-5 in the first 10 minutes of the game. CCSU went on a 10-0 run with 5:30 remaining in the first half, cutting the deficit to 27-21 at the 3:51 mark on a 3-pointer by junior guard Sarah Ernest of Fayetteville.

The Lady Ospreys answered, however, closing out the half on an 8-2 run and took a 35-23 lead at the half.

North Florida outscored CCSU 8-0 in the first three minutes of the second half, taking a 43-24 lead, and led by double digits the entire second half.

Freshman forward Kandace Walker led the Lady Lakers with 14 points, hitting four of six shots from the field, including six of seven from the free throw line. Ernest finished with 11 points, hitting four of seven from the field and three of five from three-point territory.

Up next, the Lady Lakers (2-14, 0-6) will travel to the University of South Carolina-Aiken today for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

A two-game Peach Belt Conference winning streak for the Clayton State men's team came to an end Saturday as they fell to North Florida 82-66.

North Florida led almost the entire game and took a double-digit lead, 29-19, at the 3:38 mark of the first half. North Florida led by double digits the entire second half as well. CCSU cut the deficit to 11 points at the 17:47 mark and to 13 points on several occasions but could come no closer.

For Clayton State, junior guard Jerry Johnson led the scoring attack with 24 points, hitting 8-of-14 shots from the field, including four of seven from 3-point territory and four of six from the free throw line. Johnson also had four assists and three steals. Sophomore forward John Jowers finished with 14 points.

The men will play after the Lady Lakers tonight at the University of South Carolina, Aiken.
