Mixed results for local teams in close region games By MICHAEL BOYLAN The local basketball teams had some close games over the weekend as they continued to face an onslaught of tough regional opponents. Sandy Creek played at Creekside Friday night and lost at the buzzer, 70-68. Both teams went back and forth during the game, with the Patriots' Richard Lott scoring four points to tie the score near the end of the game. Creekside snuck by Sandy Creek, though, with four seconds remaining. L.T. Lockett led the Patriots in scoring with 32 points, while William Belton added 14 and Corey Adams chipped in 10. The Patriots played at Northgate Saturday and exploded in the fourth quarter to win 80-45. Lockett only played in the second half and scored 24 points, while Belton and Adams each scored 13. The Lady Patriots lost to Northgate 42-37. The Patriots (12-5) will host Rockdale County Friday night and travel to take on Woodward Academy Saturday. McIntosh played at Stockbridge Friday night and lost 63-60. The Chiefs were down 20-14 after the first quarter but rallied to tie the score at the half. After three quaters they had a 49-43 lead but a mixture of turnovers and missing key rebounds led to the loss. Josh Burr had 21 points, all from three-pointers, while Drew Hartley added 17. The Lady Chiefs led 40-36 at the end of the third quarter but lost 49-45. McIntosh will host Eagle's Landing Friday night. On Friday Starr's Mill's girls took on Mt. Zion of Jonesboro and won 54-42. Saturday saw the Panthers take on East Coweta on the road and win both games. The boys won 53-49 on the strength of Gary Kubic's five three-pointers, while the girls won 59-51. Starr's Mill will travel to Evans Friday for games beginning at 7 p.m. The Panthers will make a much shorter trip Saturday, as they travel down the road to to take on the McIntosh Chiefs, with games beginning at 6 p.m. Fayette County will play at Mt. Zion Friday night. The Tigers hosted Forest Park Tuesday evening. |
