Jitterbuggers gets another shot

Three wonderful occurrences took place during December since the announcement of the closing of Jitterbuggers Teen club due to the building it was located in being sold.

1. The City Council of Peachtree City led by Mr. Dan Tennant is now investigating four sites in town to construct an 8,000 square-foot teen center. Center to be built and constructed with Georgia Mortar to Brick financing (method used to construct the new Peachtree City police station under construction). This proposal and design work will be on the city council retreat agenda for February 2001.

2. After the Jitterbuggers Teen Club swing dancers appeared as the opening number in the Atlanta Children's Parade Dec. 2, we had calls requesting appearances and job opportunities for the dancers to appear in shows and theatrical productions throughout metro Atlanta.

3. The Salute 2 America Parade committee for WSB Television requested The Teen Club Swing dancers to appear in the city of Atlanta July 4 parade which is the largest Independence Day parade nationwide. The dancers will be in a salute to our armed forces number with period outfits and will perform to songs such as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" and "In the Mood."

The calls of support from parents, members and the initiative of many of the young people who helped promote benefit concerts in late November to raise money also showed how deeply the teen center impacted these kids' lives in a positive way. The future for our 10,000 young people in Fayette County between the ages of 12 and 20 glows brighter with the potential to build on the success of Jitterbuggers.

We have launched a search for a new temporary site for the club operations until the city can solidify plans. The promotion of quality entertainment for young people in their own community, showcasing their talents in music and dance, will continue to be the mission of the teen club.

Many thanks are extended to the Peachtree City Council, the Children's Healthcare Parade and The Salute 2 America Parade Committee. We hope your holiday season was fantastic!

Richard Thompson, President

Jitterbuggers Teen Club
