Education Briefs
Students who have passed Accelerated Reader tests on 20 books or who have earned 50 points during the first semester will attend a party in the gymnasium of the Paul West Middle School at 1:30 p.m today. Accelerated Reader is a computerized program used all over the nation in which the students select books to read which are on their reading level and take a computerized comprehension test on the books they have read. Paul West's business partner, Kroger on Headland Drive, will provide paper goods, sodas, cake and certificates for each student. The students also will enjoy pizza from Pizza Valley at this event. A Jan. 20 parent workshop is being sponsored by the schools of the Westlake Cluster (elementary and middle schools that feed into a high school). The workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Camp Creek Middle School in College Park. Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young will speak around 9:40 a.m., with workshop sessions from 10:05 a.m. to noon. The workshop is designed to increase parent involvement in the educational process by providing home study and test preparation strategies for improving math and reading achievement. By helping parents better understand what and how their children are learning and creating an opportunity for more interaction with cluster teachers and administrators, educators hope to prepare parents to actively participate in the educational process at school and at home. Phone Camp Creek Principal Minnie Jenkins-Miller at 404-669-8030 or the Information and Community Relations Department at 404-763-6830 for information.
