The Sandy Creek High School Select Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Millie Turek, will present a pre-convention concert Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Spivey Hall on the campus of Clayton College & State University at 7:30pm.

Admission is free. The concert will feature the 30-minute program to be presented by the choir at the Georgia Music Educators Association state in-service conference to be held in Savannah Jan. 26. The CCSU choir, under the direction of Dr. Shaun Amos, will also perform.

The SCHS Mixed Chorus will be accompanied by a string quintet of players from the orchestra faculty of the Fulton County Public Schools and Curt Sanders, assistant band director at Sandy Creek, on percussion. These instrumentalists will be featured on pieces by Aaron Copland and Leornard Bernstein.

This program is supported in part by the Grassroots Arts Program of the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly and in partnership with Arts Clayton. The Council is a partnering state agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

"We wanted the students and the public to experience great works of music by 20th century American composers," said Turek. "Thanks to the generous financial grant, they will hear these pieces as the composers intended them to be performed."

Only two high school mixed choirs in the state of Georgia were invited to perform for the convention of music educators this year. Selection for this honor came to the SCHS chorus after submitting a taped audition reflecting their past three years of outstanding choral performances and festival ratings.

"This is as close as you get to a state championship for chorus. These students have worked very hard for the last three years to earn this invitation and it is an honor to perform for the state music educators," Turek said. "Through their performance, they will have the opportunity to inspire the teachers about what high school musicians can do."

Just two years ago, the Select Womens' Chorus was the first choral group from Sandy Creek to be invited to the same convention. Turek adds, "We are in very good company in this county. Groups from Fayette County High School and McIntosh High School have also achieved this honor in the past. We have wonderful choral programs in the high schools in this county, truly the best in the state!"
