Laker men get first conference win of season

Clayton College & State University mens basketball team to its first Peach Belt Conference win of the season Saturday, defeating Francis Marion University 74-67.

The Lakers took their first lead of the second half, 39-38, at the 14:01 mark on a three-pointer by junior Marty Fears, followed by pushing its lead to 47-40 at the 12:00 mark on a basket by senior Charlie Frazier.

Francis Marion retook the lead at the 8:30 mark as senior guard Wade Tucker sank two free throws to give the Patriots a 52-51 lead. After the lead switched back-and-forth for a couple of possessions, the Lakers took the lead for good on a clutch three-pointer by junior guard Jerry Johnson, which added to his game-high 21 points. Johnson drained the basket as the 30-second clock wound down, giving the Lakers a 62-56 lead with 3:48 remaining in the game.

Clayton State extended its lead to as many as nine points down stretch, thanks to some superb free throw shooting. The squad hit 12 of 14 free throws in the final 1:27 and was led by sophomore guard Harris Skoutaris drilling six of six shots from the line. Johnson and Frazier both were two for two, while Fears and freshman forward Damon Sims went one for two.

The win improves Clayton State to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Patriots drop to 3-9 and 0-3 in the PBC. Clayton State will return to the court today, traveling to Columbus State for a 7:30 p.m. game.

The Lady lakers did not fare as well.

Leading 32-30 at halftime, Francis Marion University clamped down on defense, holding the Lady lakers scoreless for more than eight minutes and went on to claim a 70-52 win Saturday. The Lady Patriots out-scored CCSU 12-0 in the stretch en route to its first win in Peach Belt Conference action.

Trailing 28-16 with 4:06 remaining in the first half, the Lady Lakers battled back into the game with 9-0 run in a span of two minutes. Junior post Amber Irby hit two straight baskets to get the run going and freshman forward Hope Jackson hit four straight free throws.

Senior guard Misty Amerson led the Lady Laker attack with 15 points, hitting five of 12 shots from the field, including three of nine from three-point territory. Guard Sarah Ernest, a junior from Fayetteville, scored nine points, going three for seven from the field, all three-pointers.

Clayton State (2-10; 0-2) will return to the court tonight, traveling to Columbus State for a 5:30 p.m. PBC game.
