Local teams perform well at indoor championships By MICHAEL BOYLAN Several local teams fared well in the 2001 Indoor Championships at The Soccer Centre in Fayetteville over the holiday break. In the U-19 Open Division, the AFC Lightning Red team won. The team played six games in one day and went 5-1. They defeated the Upson Revolution 3-2 in the first game and then lost to SW Cobb, 3-2. In the third game, AFC Lightning beat Columbus 7-3 and then shut out Lanier Flames 4-0. The team faced the Flames again in the semifinals and won 2-1. In the final game, AFC Lightning Red defeated SW Cobb 4-2. In the High School Girls Division, the Lady Panthers, made up of members of the two-time state champion Starr's Mill Panther girls soccer team, was runner-up. They played five games in one day and went 4-1. In the first game, the Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Indians 4-0. The team then went on to beat the Bulldogs 9-0, Milton 4-1 and the Bulldogs 10-0 in the semifinals. The Lady Panthers lost to Milton in overtime in the finals 2-1. The Fayette-Nam team won the U-11 Premier Division, defeating the Red Star S team 4-3 and the Red Star T team 7-0. Fayette-Nam then defeated the DC Force team 9-1 to capture the title. In the U-11 Athena Division, the Lazers won the title, defeating Bryan's brats 2-1 in the first game, the Augusta Vipers 2-0 in the second game and then defeating Bryan's Brats 3-1 in the final. The Soccer Centre will host the Four-a-Side Championships Monday, Jan. 15. Each team is guaranteed six games and there will be play in all divisions from U-10 to U-19, including high school varsity and junior varsity.
