Wrestlers meet at Duals after successful holiday schedule By MICHAEL BOYLAN The County Duals were held at Sandy Creek High School last night and all four local high schools sent their wrestling teams to compete. The results will most likely be in Friday's paper and on the internet. The teams had a busy holiday season, though, and those results are in. Starr's Mill traveled to the Hoover Invitational in Alabama last weekend and won it all. Ariston Bowers and Chris Coleman were the only wrestlers on the team to place first overall in the tournament, at 152 and 160 respectively, but the team performed well in all weight divisions. Lee Gresham placed third at 112, while Kevin Trickey and Scott Hartpence placed sixth in their weight divisions, 119 and 130 respectively. Bryan Kyser placed third at 135, Danny Davidson placed third at 140 and Jason Kiefer placed third at 145. Drew Cofty placed second at 160 and Matt Fuhrmann placed third at 171, while Rusty Lyle placed fifth in the same division. Dan Fuhrman placed fith at 189 and Tony Tofanelli placed third at 215. Starr's Mill also posted wins over Northgate and Jones County last week. The Panthers defeated Northgate, 61-12 and beat Jones County, 55-24. Starr's Mill is currently 8-3 in dual meets and several wrestlers have imprerssive records. Coleman is undefeated at 19-0, Bowers is 22-1, Kiefer is 20-1, Davidson is 23-4 and Lyle is 24-3. Fayette County faced some regional competition last week as they met Mt. Zion, Jonesboro, Lovejoy and east Coweta. The Tigers defeated Mt. Zion, Jonesboro, 64-15, winning 15 weight divisions. The winners were Thomas Lowry, 112; Stephen McElrath, 119; Matt Kellerman, 125; Zack Nelson, 135; Nick Foster, 140; Chad McLean, 145; Joe Strickland, 152; Ben Waddell, 160; Gareth Joseph, 171; Chris Leslie, 215; and James Bouie, 275. In their match against Lovejoy, the Tigers won again, 66-13. Repeat winners in the Lovejoy match were Lowry, McElrath, Kellerman, Foster, Strickland, Leslie and Bouie. Other winners were T.J. Cox, 103; Brian Eller, 130; Will Barnes, 171; and Sammy Line, 180. The Tigers were not as fortunate against East Coweta, losing 46-33. The winners in that match were Cox, McElrath, Kellerman, Foster, Joseph and Bouie. McIntosh faced some stiff competition last week as well, traveling to take on mcEachern and Wheeler. McEachern is one of the powerhouses of AAAAA and dealt with the Chiefs swiftly, but McIntosh battled Wheeler and only lost 45-37. The Chiefs had to forfeit two weight classes which made the loss that much tougher. Daniel Graham, 112, won both his matches against Wheeler and McEachern, improving to 25-2 on the year. Others who wrestled well were Justin Edwards, 140; and Michael Lee, 171. Lee wrestled at 160 last year and took second in the state. He had knee surgery in the off season and is still not at full strength. All of this leads to what obviously is expected to be an interesting county dual meet. Starr's Mill is still the favorite, but there are weight divisions up for grabs and anything can happen on any given day. |
