B-ball action heats up as second half of season begins By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starrs Mill Panthers boys basketball team finished third in the University City Roundball Classic Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. during the holiday break. The team faltered in the semifinal game against West Mecklenburg out of Charlotte, losing 78-74. The Panthers led 22-10 at the end of the first quarter and 40-35 at the half. Things started to go awry after the break though, as they trailed 55-50 at the end of the third quarter. Bret Zondervan led the team with 30 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Che Brewer played his best all around game with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Chris Oakley chipped in with eight points, two assists and two steals. The team ended the tournament on a winning note by defeating Apex High School out of Raleigh, N.C. 60-52. The score was tied at 16-16 at the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers steadily pulled away, leading 31-25 at the half and 44-37 at the end of the third quarter. Donny Lampen led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds, Chris Oakley played a fine overall game and had 11 points and two assists, and Che Brewer continued his fine tournament play with 10 points and six rebounds. Coach Tim Miller was very happy about the caliber of competition at the tournament and cited his team for their much more aggressive defense in the second game of the tournament. In games played over the weekend, the Starr's Mill boys split. The Panthers defeated Fayette County, 76-60 and then lost to Riverdale Saturday, 78-52. The Lady Panthers edged out the Lady Tigers of Fayette County Friday night, 43-41 and then lost the following night to Riverdale, 62-49. Sandy Creek's basketball teams also split this weekend. Friday night the boys defeated Union Grove 67-34, while the Lady Patriots won 63-15. Sandy Creek traveled to Westlake Saturday night and lost. The boys were defeated 64-60, while the girls lost, 85-31. The Westlake boys team is ranked fourth in AAAA. McIntosh faced East Coweta Saturday night and had mixed results. The boys defeated the Indians 64-52, while the girls lost to the Lady Indians, 55-42. It was the first win at McIntosh for the Lady Indians under coach Paula Jones. McIntosh hosted Fayette County Tuesday night and will travel to Stockbridge Friday night for games beginning at 7 p.m. In other games scheduled for this weekend, Starr's Mill will host Mt. Zion, Jonesboro Friday night and will travel to East Coweta on Saturday night. Sandy Creek will play at Creekside Friday night and will play at Northgate Saturday night. Games Friday begin at 7 p.m., while games Saturday begin at 6 p.m. |
