The second half of the winter season of high school athletics gets underway this weekend.

Wrestling teams will head to prominent tournaments, while basketball and swim teams face region rivals.

On the basketball courts, Sandy Creek starts up Friday with a home game against Union Grove at 7 p.m. They will travel to take on the Westlake Lions at 6 p.m. Saturday. To get to Westlake High School from Sandy Creek High School, travel on I-85 to I-285 west. Take 285 west to the Campbellton Road exit. Travel on Campbellton Road through the traffic light where it intersects with Camp Creek Parkway, and take a left on Union Road. The high school is one block up on the left.

Starr's Mill's basketball squads will host the Fayette County boys and girls teams Friday at 7 p.m. and McIntosh's boys and girls will host East Coweta Saturday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. All four teams are in Region 4-AAAAA and could see each other at least one more time before the season ends.

In wrestling, McIntosh will travel to Perry, Ga., for the Perry Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Action begins at 5 p.m. Friday and at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Chiefs have a number of wrestlers performing well at several different weights. Georgiawrestler.com has a number of them listed as contenders and dark horses in their weight classes.

Starr's Mill also will be on the road this weekend as the team travels to Hoover, Ala., for the Hoover Invitational. Both meets will be precursors for the County Duals, which will be at Sandy Creek High School Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. The Panthers are state contenders again this year and should have the majority of their squad intact, now that the members of the football team have returned.

McIntosh's swim team will travel to Heritage High School Saturday for a tri-meet at 1 p.m. If you would like to travel to the Johnson Park Pool, where the Heritage team swims, the easiest way to get there is to travel to Conyers on Ga. Highway 138. Stay on 138 until it crosses over Ebenezer Road, near Sonny's Barbecue. The pool is at 1781 Ebenezer Rd.

The Chiefs' next meet will be Jan. 12 when they host Fayette County High School at the Kedron Aquatic Center at 5:30 p.m. Starr's Mill will not get back into action until Jan. 19, when they host Sandy Creek at Kedron Aquatic Center.
