Resolving
to make resolutions stick By MICHAEL
BOYLAN It'll be another week. This week's column will be about New Year's Day and resolutions. What will be your resolution this year? Is it the same one you had last year? If so, don't bother. You should resolve to have more will power and that is all you can hope for. You might resolve to lose weight, quit smoking, stop swearing or to be more positive, but chances are you won't make it every hour of every day. Don't feel bad. I don't know anybody that stuck to their New Year's resolution, except for maybe the Unabomber, and look where he ended up. Perhaps one should lower the bar and say, "I resolve to drop some weight for a period of time." It is pretty likely that you could do that and just think of how good that would make you feel. You made a resolution and you accomplished it. "I resolve to stop smoking three packs a day." If you get down to two packs a day, you da man (or woman. Baby steps. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Rome wasn't built in a day and cold turkey never tastes that good. So, what are my resolutions this year? I resolve to do at least a little work on my play each day. If I can spend some time on it, chances are it may actually be completed in 2001. I resolve to drink more water and less soda. Anyone who knows me knows my caffeinated beverage consumption could stand to be lowered. One less Coke a day and two more cups of water a day and I have accomplished what I set out to do. Lastly, I resolve to be less caustic. I have been known to make a snide comment or two (a day) and I should tone it down. If I can just hold my tongue and only think my sarcastic thoughts, nobody will hear them and laugh, thus encouraging me. So, what will your resolutions be? Do you agree that taking little steps might be easier, and will encourage you to finally achieve the greater goals of your resolutions. I hope so. Have a happy and safe New Year's Eve. |
