Panthers place fifth in Christmas Classic By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Sandy Creek Christmas Invitational was one of the largest wrestling tournaments of the season. 33 teams were in attendance and many of the participants were state champions. The tournament served as an indicator of how teams will fair at the state meet, which closes the season. Troup County finished in first place with 236 points. They were followed by McEachern in second place with 203 points and Harrison in third place with 193.5 points. Starr's Mill, state champions of AAA last year, finished in fifth place overall with 184 points. Jason Kiefer was the only individual champion for the Panthers in the tournament. He wrestles in the 145 pound weight class. Ariston Bowers placed second at 152. The Panthers hit a tough spot in the second round of the tournament, when Chris Coleman sprained his ankle. He is expected to be out one to two weeks. Other local schools competed in the tournament as well. Northgate finished in 11th place with 84.5 points, while Sandy Creek placed 17th with 61 points. Fayette County placed 21st with 49 points. Many of the teams are off until school starts back up, but McIntosh will wrestle at McEachern at 10 a.m. next Wednesday, while Starr's Mill travels to Northgate at 6 p.m. next Wednesday. |
