Starr's Mill swim team loses in close meet with Salem

The Starr's Mill swim team entered last Saturday's meet against Salem High School with a record of 2-1. After 17 events, the Panthers held a small lead and hopes to improve to 3-1 before the holiday break. Salem edged out Starr's Mill, though, 276-260, leaving the squad at .500.

On the positive side, the Panthers did have some first-place finishes, as well as several state qualifiers.

Kenny Jubb, Will Hardison, Brett Stevens and Kyle Flora qualified for the state meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley. The boys finished with a time of 1:51.09. The girls squad placed second in the event. Hardison also took first place in the 200-yard freestyle. he was followed by Chris Frederick and Eric Simonsen in second and third place respectively.

Flora had two first place finishes at the meet, in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. Jubb took first place in the 100-yard backstroke. Another first-place finisher was Laural Surratt in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The team has also locked up other qualifiers for the state meet on Feb. 16 and 17. Freshman Brittany Stevens, who won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly against Salem, qualified for the state meet, as did the boys relay teams in the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle.
