Industrial boom predicted for South Fulton

By JOHN THOMPSON

The South Fulton industrial base is getting ready to grow by leaps and bounds.

That's the message that many attendees took away from last week's annual meeting of the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

One of the major projects getting ready to start is in the Interstate 285-Camp Creek Parkway area in East Point.

East Point's certified economic developer, Helene Caseltine, is meeting this week with officials of the Duke-Weeks company, which is planning the project.

The project encompasses more than 500 acres and will bring five to six million square feet of industrial space to the South Fulton area.

"This will be a development of regional importance," Caseltine side.

Along with industrial space will be warehousing and distribution space, which is already starting to draw interest from some national companies, Caseltine side.

There is an existing small industrial area at the entrance to the project that will be retrofitted to fit the needs of the park, she added.

The Duke-Weeks project will pump several million dollars into the regional economy and bring hundreds of jobs. While Caseltine has been on the job for only a month in East Point, this is one of the biggest projects she has dealt with during her career as an economic developer.

"I think the whole look of this area will change dramatically in the next five years," she said.
