The high school basketball season started heating up last weekend, thanks to some rivalries, both old and new.

On Friday, McIntosh squared off against Newnan. The Lady Chiefs lost to the Lady Cougars, 59-52, despite a solid performance from Megan Bartels, who scored 15 points and led all scorers. The boys were more fortunate. They began a 20-7 run in the second period and defeated Newnan, 56-39. Drew Hartley was the leading scorer for the Chiefs with 16 points.

On Saturday, the Chiefs visited Fayette County High School. McIntosh's boys looked solid again, as they thumped the Tigers, 64-39. The defense was outstanding for the Chiefs this weekend, limiting both opponents to less than 10 points a quarter. Hartley was the leading scorer for the Chiefs again with 18 points, while Scott Prah added 14 points and Neil Hubble netted eight points

The Lady Chiefs lost to the Lady Tigers, 42-37. Fayette County established a 30-22 lead at the half and hung on to win. The Lady Tigers' Kara Davis led all scorers with 13 points. Fayette County's girls played Morrow the night before and lost 58-48. The Lady Tigers had a 31-19 lead at one point, but saw it dwindle as the game progressed. Fayette County got good performances from freshman Tiffany Norris, who scored 14 points, and Mandi Nortson and Kara Davis, who added 13 points and 12 points respectively.

In other games from the weekend, Starr's Mill's girls defeated Sandy Creek, 56-41. The lady panthers got to the foul line 28 times, while the Lady Patriots reached the charity stripe nine times. Three girls on the Sandy Creek team fouled out in the loss. The East Coweta Lady Indians fell to Lovejoy, 57-51, and the Newnan Lady Cougars won again, defeating Carrollton, 70-35.
