Former Lady Cougars perform well at collegiate level Former Newnan High School Lady Cougar Karen Hembree has found her place in college soccer. After staying off the soccer fields her freshman year, Hembree has joined the Wofford College side as a stopper/sweeper for the team. High school fans may find that hard to believe since Hembree is the all time leading goal scorer and points leader in Newnan history, but will remember that she controlled the midfield at the end of her senior year to balance out the Lady Cougars. She also played a similar defensive role with her club team, Peachtree City Lazers, her final season. After not receiving much playing time earlier this year, Hembree has become a linchpin in the back as injuries hit the team and tactical changes were made in the squad. She is a consistent performer for the Wofford side and has risen to the occasion in the collegiate arena. With Hembree joining Wofford on the soccer field, Newnan High School currently has three former Lady Cougars in the college ranks: Hembree at Wofford, Anne Barrow at Rhodes College, and Katie Smith at Andrew College. These three players are the only Newnan Lady Cougar soccer players to continue playing at the next level after graduation and part of the small family of Coweta County ladies that extended their soccer careers. |
