Hunter releases credit records

With just days to go before the election, Coweta County Commission Chairman Vernon "Mutt" Hunter was put in the position of defending his spending.

Challenger Marvin McKoy's campaign made a formal open records request last week to find out all the charges Hunter has placed on his county credit card in the last five years.

"I don't know why he made a request. I would have given them to him," Hunter said.

County Administrator Theron Gay complied with the request and supplied copies to the press. In five years, Hunter charged $1721.79. All of the expenses were related to out-of-town conferences the commissioners attended.

"I'll also tell you that Coweta County did not pay for one meal for my wife," Hunter said.

He added, with a smile on his face, that he would admit that his wife did sleep in the same bed with him at the conferences.

Hunter also questioned why a copy of the open records request was sent to the
U. S. Department of Justice, Criminal Civil Rights Division.

"I'll give that credit card back right now," he said.

The commission chairman said he had never been questioned about his financial matters in all the years of government and said he has nothing to hide.

After Hunter address the credit card issue, Commissioner Charlie Jones chimed in and said being a commissioner is the worst job he has had in his life and the campaign he just lost was one of the worst he has faced.
