Big weekend at Senoia Speedway

This weekend Senoia Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing presents the first ever Asphalt Championships bringing the 2000 season to an end. With qualifying on Friday night and racing on Saturday night the drivers and their crews are gearing up for the fight to the finish. This event will be anything but calm as points and money are up for grabs in almost all divisions. Emotions are high and drivers are preparing for the ride of their lives.

With one race left in the 2000 season, Scott Griffin leads by only five points in the Late Model Division trailed by rookie driver Marc Mitchell of Tallahassee, Fla. Jackson, GA's B.J. Holley has a shot at finishing third in the points race as he trails Tyrone's Wayne Hansard by three points.

Points leader Scott Griffin will be running with the number 44 on his car in place of his normal number 13 Saturday night, in memory of the late John Bass of Tyrone. Bass was a former driver at Senoia Speedway who passed away weeks ago after crashing in an ultra light (aircraft). Bass and the Griffin family started driving at Senoia Speedway, also known as Senoia Raceway , when it was a dirt track. He was a long time employee of Goodyear's aviation retread plant in Forest Park, GA.

Brooks' Andy Cash sewed up the championship in the Sportsman division several weeks ago, but Newnan's Steve Payton still has a shot at the runner up position over Mark Lore as he trails him by 42 points.

Senoia's Mark Lore will repeat as the Street Stock Point Champion for his second season with rookies' Ted Willingham and Jason Turner still battling for second place honors. Locust Grove's Robbie Gober is in fourth but Fayetteville's Mike Steffens trails him by 29 points with a shot for fourth.

Gay, Ga.'s Troy French hopes to repeat last year's finish as he leads Jonesboro's Cary Hamilton by 26 points for the championship in the Mini Stocks Division. Fayetteville's Darrel Carlson trails Newnan's James Waite by 28 points for third place. Arthur Jordon is only 23 points behind Keith Adams for the fifth place position. Rookie LaGrange driver Shawn Morgan along with Mike Chambers could place in the top five as they are both capable of mixing into the equation.

Locust Grove's Shane Upchurch has clenched the Senoia Speedway Legends Pro Semi-Pro Masters Division over Marc Mitchell. However, a battle still exists among Johnny East, Doug Stevens, and Lloyd Wittenburg as they all have a mathematical chance at positions three through five in the championship.

Only 14 points separate the battle of seven in the Young Lyons/Chargers Divisions as two Senoia natives, Scott Tinsley and Bubba Pollard, will do battle for the championship. Tinsley is the defending Division Champion while Pollard is in his rookie season. Nine points separate Cindy Anderson and Bubba Harry for the third place position with McDonough's Brandon Brilliant only seven points behind Bobby East for fifth.

Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. All Qualifying will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Races will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Don't forget to buy some tickets for the Senoia Speedway Awards Banquet November 26th. Tickets may be purchased at $25 a person and will be $35 each after November 4 at the door.
