Southsiders excel again at Army 10-Miler

After training together for almost three months, 11 personnel from Fort McPherson, all residents of Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, and Henry counties representing the Third U.S. Army, traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 16th annual Army 10-Miler.

The race is one of the nation's premiere running events and is now the largest 10-mile race in the world and, according to participants, is easily the most competitive.

Of the 16,166 entrants, more than 11,800 made it to the starting line beside the Pentagon and more than 11,700 finished on an ideal weather day, unlike last year's rain-sodden event. There were more than 600 teams as well.

Looking for a third consecutive win in the All Comers team division, the Third Army Men's Team, with an average age of 44, instead finished in second place this year with a cumulative time of 4:07:32 out of 29 teams in their division. A cumulative time is calculated by totaling the top four times on the team.

The Falls Road Racing Team from Baltimore, with an average age of 28, defeated them with a cumulative time of 4:19:02. The men's team is determined to take back the title they have held the previous two years and prove they aren't "over the hill" just yet, said team member Bob Dalton of Fayetteville.

The real success story, though, is the Third Army Women's Active Duty Master's team who, competing for the first time, took first place in their division with a cumulative time of 5:52:17. They easily defeated the next closest team, TC 2LT, with 5:59:55. All members of the squad improved their time trial times from last July by four to eight minutes. They were presented with the coveted first place team award for their efforts, an eagle on a wooden pedestal.

Following are the team members and their "chip" times:
