Playoff picture shaping up for local teams By MICHAEL BOYLAN Last Friday evening before a packed crowd, McIntosh led Starr's Mill for an all too brief moment for Chief fans. Soon afterward, the Panthers (9-0) played like a team headed for the playoffs and scored 30 points in the second quarter en route to 51-3 win. Starr's Mill ran up 536 yards of offense on the evening with Reuben Houston and Ricardo Heard each rushing for over 100 yards. Houston scored the first two touchdowns of the game, while Heard scred the third and Drew Cofty closed out the first half with a 12-yard touchdown reception. Starr's Mill, still ranked ninth in Class AAAAA will wrap up the regular season this week by hosting Eagle's Landing (1-7), while McIntosh travels to take on Stockbridge (1-7). East Coweta entered the fourth quarter of their game with Henry County tied at 14. The Indians (8-0) then made two huge interceptions and scored off of both turnovers to win 24-14. Derek White came up big for East Coweta with 101 yards rushing, including a 57-yard touchdown run. The Indians travel this week to Twelve Oaks Stadium in Lovejoy to take on Jonesboro (4-4). The Cardinals will not be easy opponents for East Coweta and the Indians must not be looking ahead to their final match of the season against the Newnan Cougars. East Coweta is still tied for 10th place in Class AAAAA. In the other local 4-AAAAA game, Fayette County (1-8) lost to North Clayton 29-14. North Clayton scored early and often, leading 22-7 at the half. Tiger quarterback Nathaniel Enloe threw touchdown passes to T.J. Brandenburg and Josh Davis in the loss and Corey Burton ran well on on several drives. The Tigers will close out their season this Friday when they host Morrow (3-5). In 4-AAAA football, Sandy Creek (6-2) clinched a state playoff spot for the second straight year by defeating Woodward Academy 18-7. The Patriots were looking for another shutout but gave up a touchdown in the closing minutes. Sandy Creek got a big performance from Kelvin German, who is replacing J.R. Lemon while Lemon's wrist heals. German had 145 yards rushing setting up touchdowns by Jack O'Neil and Mark Lawson. It was the first time that Sandy Creek defeated Woodward Academy in school history. The Patriots will celebrate their homecoming this Friday with agame against Rockdale County (4-4). The Patriots are ranked seventh in Class AAAA. Northgate (7-1) remained near the top of 5-AA by defeating Lamar County 20-12. The Vikings had a balanced attack and got a good performance from their defense. Northgate will host Decatur (0-8) on Friday night before closing out the regular season with a game against Grady. Northgate is ranked eighth in Class AA. Landmark Christian (1-7) put up some points in their game against Bowdon last Friday but fell short and lost 27-14. With the win, Bowdon was ranked 10th in Class A. The War Eagles get a good shot at a win and some momentum this week when they host Heard County (0-8). |
