Nontraditional Halloween activities available for county residents this weekend

Halloween is not for everybody, but that doesn't mean that one cannot enjoy the fall season. There are several alternatives to Halloween activities this weekend for families to enjoy.

One such activity is a hayride. Enjoy the colors of the changing season on a hayride at Harp's Farm. They are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Rides are $5 per person. They are also available for scheduling by groups at other times by calling 770-461-1821. Harp's farm is also selling pumpkins that can be used for decoration, baking pumpkin seeds or baking pumpkin pies.

There are also a lot of area churches and businesses that are offering fall festivals as an alternative to Halloween celebrations. The Union City Wal-Mart is offering a fall family festival Saturday, Oct. 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is a creative alternative to Halloween trick or treating that promotes family values. There will be pony rides, live music, food, boots with prizes, lots of candy and more.

Some area churches that are offering fall festivals are Inman United Methodist Church and North Fayette United Methodist Church Oct. 28., National Heights Baptist and Fayetteville First United Methodist Oct. 29, and Flat Creek Baptist and McDonough Road Baptist Oct. 31. All of the festivals are fairly similar, with Flat Creek Baptist as the exception. Flat Creek Baptist's theme is "Western Hoe Down" and will feature calf roping, sheep shearing, hayrides, a duck pond, face painting and games.

There also are alternatives to haunted houses. Kenwood Christian Church student ministries invites area youth to Journey Through Hell, a Halloween/haunted house alternative, Oct. 28 and 29. Beware, this event will leave you searching for answers to eternal questions.

Tours will begin at 6:30 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. The event is recommended for ages 10 to adult and is free of charge. Groups are encouraged to call 770-461-1487 for advance reservations.

Kenwood Christian Church is at 1577 Ga. Highway 85 south, Fayetteville 30215.

Of course, all of the activities that one would do on an ordinary weekend are open. There is bowling, roller skating, trips to the movies and more. Now is a time to celebrate the changing of the seasons. A car ride to view the foliage is always a good way to spend an afternoon together as well.

The key is to have fun. If everybody is having fun, this will be a great weekend for all.
