The state's largest cross-country region meet was held Saturday at Sandy Creek High School. Region 4-AAAAA is comprised of 16 teams, including teams from Fayette, Clayton, Coweta and Henry counties, and one team from Augusta.

This was the first region meet ever held for this division, due to the realignment of all the athletic teams in the public schools statewide last spring.

The meet was also important because it was the last opportunity for teams to qualify for the state meet with a first- or second-place finish.

The competition was extremely tough, but the Fayette County varsity boys team was able to capture the title of region champs. Trey Alverson, who is having an outstanding season, was the overall winner of the race with an impressive time of 16:07.

The win for the Tigers was sealed with Blake Riley, Jon Riley and Adam Pekarske finishing eighth, ninth and 10th respectively, as well as Blake Alverson stepping up to fill the 18th slot.

Coach David Phillips knew that position was the key to the race and his runners produced the results which brought about the first-place finish.

Fayette County edged out Lovejoy and Stockbridge, who came in second and third, while McIntosh and Starr's Mill rounded out the top five.

The boys will compete again in the state meet in two weeks.

They are the only Region 4-AAAAA boys team from Fayette County eligible for the meet and are looking forward to competing against some of the best teams in the state.

The Lady Tigers also had a great race. Jessica Tyre, Fayette's top runner, finished 16th overall. Coach Phillips was pleased with the great effort Tyre exerted, since she has been recovering from an injury.

Completing the varsity girls team for Fayette was Amy Eller, Rachel Swafford, Margaret Sams, Taryn Kendall, Lydia Sherwin and Kim Eddy. The girls finished fifth overall.

The JV team continues to show promise for the Tigers as well. They ran in the open race and four of the boys reeived ribbons for their finishes. Earl Barlow finished third overall, followed by Ian Stewart, Ryan Wolfe, Kyle Calhoun and Kris Honojosa finishing eight, ninth, 16th and 21st respectively.

Landmark's boys ran in the championship division of the Last Chance Invitational in Carrollton over the weekend. The War Eagles finished fifth overall with a team time of 1:28.57 and 170 points overall.

Blake Fertitta finished third overall with a time of 16:41, and Clark Rivers finished 11th overall with a time of 17:13. Finishing in 39th and 40th place were Joseph Register and Eric Sumner with times of 18:00 and 18:02. Scott Emery finished 80th overall with a time of 18:59.
