Panthers, Patriots keep winning By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starr's Mill Panthers (8-0) had a brief scare during their homecoming game against the Morrow Mustangs Friday night but held on to win 23-0. The Panthers established a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Morrow started a six-and-a-half-minute drive that brought them to the Starr's Mill 3-yard-line before stalling. Minutes later, the Mustangs intercepted a ball in the Panthers red zone only to go into the half still down by 10 points. Morrow would not score in the game and Starr's Mill would score two more times in the third quarter to take a 23-0 lead and capture the win. The Panthers got touchdowns from Jason Laney on a 1-yard run, Drew Cofty on a 31-yard run and Reuben Houston on a 24-yard reception. The Panthers had 400 yards of total offense as they locked up the top spot in Division A of Region 4-AAAAA. The Panthers take a short bus ridethis Friday night to face McIntosh. East Coweta, the team at the top of Division B of Region 4-AAAAA, defeated Stockbridge 46-2. The Indians got two touchdowns from Preston Strickland and continued to perform exceptionally well. They will host Henry County (2-6) this Friday night. The War Hawks lost to Lovejoy last week, 35-0. McIntosh traveled to face the Mt. Zion Bulldogs and lost 28-3. The Chiefs (1-6) controlled the ball and the clock in the first quarter and they did so without running back Jim O'Shea. McIntosh trailed the Bulldogs 7-3 late in the second quarter but fumbled, which led to a Mt. Zion touchdown before the half. The Chiefs showed some bright spots and will get another test this week as they host Starr's Mill. It will be the first time these two teams have met on the gridiron. Fayette County (1-7) traveled to take on the Forest Park Panthers, and the Tigers, who have had more than their share of tough losses this year, lost 20-7. The Tigers' offense looked great in some spots. Nathaniel Enloe passed for 152 yards and T. J. Brandenburg had 110 yards receiving. He also scored the only touchdown. Fayette County will host the North Clayton Eagles (1-6) Friday night. Sandy Creek improved to 5-2 by beating the Westlake Lions 10-0, but lost two key players in the win. J.R. Lemon broke his wrist and will be out until the playoffs, while Brooks Martin tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will be out for the remainder of the season. The defense was its usual stingy self, allowing only 135 yards of offense from the Lions. The Patriots connected on a field goal in the third quarter and then capitalized on a fumble, recovered by Kedric Goalston, in the fourth quarter. Lemon scored off of a 3-yard run to seal the win for the Patriots. Sandy Creek is tied in region play with Jones County with a record of 3-1. However, Jones County must play Creekside, the team at the top of the region, before the season is over. The Patriots have now won three games in a row and have momentum heading into Friday's game at Woodward Academy in College Park. The Northgate Vikings (6-1) played their second of three straight road games last Friday night and won. The Vikings defeated Greenville 34-8 and now will face Lamar County (4-3), which defeated Callaway 44-0 Friday night. Landmark Christian (1-6) was idle last week, which gave some of their nagging injuries a chance to heal. This week the War Eagles will face Bowdon. |
