Sunday Briefs
In a move that was little more than a formality, the Fayetteville City Council voted Monday night to call for a special Nov. 7 election concerning liquor sales in the city, and authorized the county election department to supervise the election. It was pointed out that this was simply a housekeeping procedure, as the recent petition drive by Lane Brown to have the measure brought to a vote made the council's actions mandatory when the signatures on the petition were verified by the county. The election will be held at the Depot in Fayetteville, which is not a general polling site for city or county voters , Starr's Mill High School's PTSA will host a "Meet the Candidates" forum Monday, Oct. 9, in the school's media center. Candidates for school board and members-elect will be present. State Rep. Kathy Cox will moderate. School finance director Jim Stephens will be present to answer questions on the Nov. 7 bond referendum. The Fayette County Board of Commissioners met Thursday in a special called meeting and set the millage rates at 7.556 for residents of the cities and 6.562 for those in the unincorporated county. This is a 22-percent increase over last year's rates, which were 6.31 and 5.21, respectively. Also, residents in Tyrone,
Brooks, Woolsey and unincorporated Fayette County will pay 3.778 mills
for fire services. But the fire tax rate is going down 5.5 percent, as
the 1999 rate was four mills.
