Tigers take third place at Jekyll Island By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Fayette County High School cross country team traveled to Jekyll Island, Ga. this weekend to take part in the Jekyll Island Invitational. The teams had to run in poor conditions, as the course had standing water up to six inches deep from overnight rains. A coastal flood watch was in effect and the runnners had to fight wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Despite this, Fayette County was able to clinch third place in the boy's championship division. The Tigers competed against 36 teams in the meet. Senior Trey Alverson finished first for the Tigers. He was the overall winner of the race, with a time of 16:55. His time was over 10 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Blake Riley finished 23rd overall. He and Alverson received medals for their finishes. Jon Riley, John Miklas and Adam Pekarske rounded out the top five for the Tigers. The Fayette County girls also ran in the meet on Saturday. The girls performed well, despite missing their lead runner, Jessica Tyre. The weather conditions worsened during their race when a downpour started. The top three runners to finish for were Amy Eller, Margaret Sams and Rachel Swafford. The cross country teams will head to Albany, Ga. this weekend to run in the Westover invitational. |
