Something to write home about

One team's streak is still alive, while another team's less fortunate streak is over.

The Starr's Mill Panthers improved to 5-0 with a win over Mt. Zion Jonesboro Friday night, while the McIntosh losing streak ended with a win against Eagle's Landing in their homecoming game.

Mt. Zion took an early lead, scoring on the third play of the game. They took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter, where the panthers promptly scored off of a 51-yard touchdown pass to Reuben Houston. The Bulldogs nudged ahead again with a field goal before McClaren and Houston connected again, this time with a 49-yard touchdown pass. Jake Jones scored another touchdown for Starr's Mill and the Panthers had an 18-13 lead at the half.

Jones was running for an injured Jason Laney. He ran for over 70 yards and two more touchdowns in the second half. The Panthers wanted to avenge last year's loss to the Bulldogs and, thanks to critical plays from Drew Cofty and Jones as well as outstanding defense from Tony Tofanelli, Andrew Bashakes and Jason Earwood, they were triumphant. Starr's Mill won 38-27 and prepares for Lovejoy this Friday.

Lovejoy (3-1) lost to Evans last Friday. If the Panthers can defeat the Wildcats, the path to the region championship is a little bit smoother.

The McIntosh Chiefs had their homecoming last Friday and it was something to write home about. The Chiefs hosted Eagle's Landing and came out blasting. Their first drive was big. Jim O'Shea ran the ball a number of times, producing first downs on each run and getting great yardage. He capped off the five-minute drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

Eagle's Landing retaliated quickly with a huge pass play. There was also a face mask penalty called against McIntosh and the Golden Eagles went from their 20-yard line to the Chiefs' 18-yard line in a matter of seconds. It was 7-7 soon after.

The second quarter started with stalled drives for both sides, but McIntosh blocked an Eagle's Landing punt and Robery Landy recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown. Eagle's Landing drove the ball down the field on its next drive with big pass plays. It scored and converted the two-point conversion to lead the Chiefs 15-14 at the half.

The third quarter was a battle for both teams as their offenses couldn't capitalize. With 3:19 left in the quarter, McIntosh drove the ball down to the Eagle's Landing red zone. Quarterback Luke Wiggs ran the ball 13 yards into the endzone to give the Chiefs a 21-15 lead and the win.

McIntosh had a solid performance from the entire team and standout performances from Omar Jarun and Chris Cedars.

McIntosh (1-3) will travel to Newnan to take on the Cougars (3-1) Friday night. The Cougars play a similar type of game as the Golden Eagles, who have a key receiver that makes big plays.

In other action Friday, East Coweta beat Fayette County 3-0. The lone field goal came in the first quarter and both sides played tough defense against their struggling offenses. East Coweta (4-0) hosts Evans (4-0) Friday, while Fayette County (1-4) travels to take on Henry County (1-4).

The Northgate Vikings were tied with Manchester 7-7 in early going. Manchester got the ball first in overtime and drove to the Vikings' four-yard line. Northgate let them score to preserve time on the clock in hopes of scoring and converting a two-point conversion. That did not happen and the Vikings lost 14-7. Northgate (4-1) will travel to face Callaway (2-3).

Landmark Christian played Adairsville Friday night and got its offense back on track. Unfortunately, the team couldn't score enough points to keep Adairsville from winning 21-14. The War Eagles (1-4) will travel to take on Bremen (4-1) Friday night.
