It is almost time for local high schools to present their one-act plays.

Each school enters a one-act play in the regional competition in hopes of making the state competition. Last year, Sandy Creek High School placed fifth in the state with a production of "Bang, Bang, You're Dead." This year the Sandy Creek drama department will present "The Lottery" and "Twelfth Night: or What You Will."

The department will enter "Twelfth Night" in the regional competition.

"The Lottery" is a stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's short story of a strange little town. Directed by Melissa Burns, a drama instructor at Sandy Creek who recently directed "Arsenic and Old Lace," "The Lottery" examines the serious consequences of blindly following traditions. Burns has extracted a promise from the cast not to give away the surprise ending, which may be too intense for small children.

"Twelfth Night" is a one-act version of William Shakespeare's romantic comedy, which takes a look at the themes of love and deception. Twins Viola and Sebastian are shipwrecked, and unbeknownst to the other, arrive at Illyria, where complications eventually give way, allowing their happy reunion and marriage to the local nobility. The action is enhanced by live music and dancing from the Elizabethan era. The play is directed by Kathy Andersen, also a drama instructor at Sandy Creek.

The plays will be presented in the commons area of the high school Oct. 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door.

Sandy Creek will enter "Twelfth Night" in the Georgia Theatre Conference's Secondary One Act Play Festival, at Valdosta State University Oct. 19-21. It will also be presented at the Region 4-AAAA One Act Play Competition at Heritage High School in Conyers Nov. 1. If the group places first in the region, as it did last year, the actors will travel to McEachern High School Nov. 11 for the state competition.

Advance tickets, which will be sold by the cast, provide priority seating. There will also be plenty of seats available at the door. Refreshments will be sold before the show and during intermission. Call 770-969-2840, extension 259, for information.
