Football season nears end of the first month By MICHAEL BOYLAN The football season is nearing the halfway mark and many teams have a good idea of how their season is going. For the teams who are undefeated; Starr's Mill, Northgate and East Coweta, it is a matter of doing the right thing to keep the winning streaks going, while the teams that are struggling; Fayette County, Landmark Christian and McIntosh, must find a way to get a win. Starr's Mill played great football against Riverdale last Friday and won, 27-6. Unlike the week before, the Panthers (4-0) made no turnovers and chewed up the clock with a grinding running game. Jason Laney, Brad McClaren and Drew Cofty each had over 50 yards rushing, while Reuben Houston was held to 20 yards rushing on the evening. that is not surprising. he has done so well that there is practically a target on his jersey when he takes the field. Starr's Mill hosts Mt. Zion, Jonesboro (2-1) on Friday. The Bulldogs only loss came to undefeated Lovejoy, perhaps the strongest team in the region. Friday's game will be a good litmus test for the Panthers as they will face Lovejoy the following week. Look for a good ground attack from the Panthers and an intense performance from the defense. If they play mistake free ball again this week, they should be 5-0 when they take on the Wildcats. Fayette County continues to struggle with a very difficult schedule. They faced Lovejoy (3-0) on Friday night and lost, 36-0. The Tigers (1-3) gained 38 yards on 36 rushing attempts and had trouble slowing down the Wild cats offense. Things don't get any easier this week when they host East Coweta (3-0), which rolled over North Clayton, 31-13. Other games on Friday night included Northgate (4-0) defeating Crim (2-1), 21-12 and Landmark Christian (1-3) losing to Gordon Lee (2-2), 27-0. Northgate's ofense met a tough Crim defense, while Landmark's offense continues to search for a consistent way to score. Northgate hosts Manchester (2-1) on Friday, while Landmark hosts Adairsville (2-2). McIntosh (0-3) played for the second consecutive Saturday at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro. This week McIntosh faced Jonesboro (2-1) and lost 28-0. Jonesboro outsized the Chiefs and put together several good offensive drives. McIntosh hosts Eagle's Landing (1-3) on Friday. It will be their homecoming game and one of their best shots for a win so far this season. The only game eagle's landing won this year was against Union Grove, a first year varsity team with no seniors. |
