McIntosh volleyball
gets big wins against big teams
The McIntosh Lady Chiefs volleyball team jelled in time to handle county
rival Fayette County High School in two sets last week.
The team also swept Eagles Landing, Union Grove and Henry County and took
Newnan High School in three sets.
The highly anticipated match against previously undefeated Fayette County
turned on strong net play and excellent serving. The Lady Chiefs swept
the Lady Tigers in two sets, 15-8, 15-7. Excellent passing and setting,
led by junior Allison Cheatham and senior Kathryn Murphy, contributed
to strong attacks at the net.
Junior Megan Bartels led with four kills and five attacks and junior Tara
Hamilton with three kills and seven attacks. Senior Kristi Oates and Bartels
had two blocks apiece. The entire squad served
at a 90 percent success rate, while the Lady Tigers struggled with the
serve.
Against Union Grove, a new school in Henry County, Cheatham again was
a stand-out setter, with 15 assists. Senior Staci Stoller served nine
winners and junior Ankia DuPreez had five kills at the net.
The serving went cold against Henry County except for Kristi Oates. She
stepped up and carried her teammates with 14 strong serves. She also contributed
five kills, six digs and a block in a strong individual performance. Megan
Bartels had eight kills, five attacks and two blocks. Kathryn Murphy had
four kills and many good sets. Tara Hamilton contributed four kills and
eight attacks.
The Newnan Lady Cougars fell to the Lady Chiefs in three games, 15-5,
13-15, 15-10. McIntosh was led by Bartels, Oates and Murphy. The majority
of game points were won on serves and kills by the three. Strong serving
from junior Allison Cheatham also contributed to the win.
McIntosh Coach Taasha Moore says, "We were able to get the huge points
late. I shuffled our lineup some and we let a couple of balls drop, but
overall I'm pleased. They were winning points off of short serves so we
called a time-out and made the necessary adjustments."
The McIntosh Lady Chiefs hope their strong run the past few weeks serves
them well as they meet crosstown rivals Starr's Mill at McIntosh Sept.
12. Coach Taasha Moore feels her squad is ready to avenge an early season
defeat at the hands of the Lady Panthers.
