The Fayette County Lady Tigers
volleyball team faced off with the McIntosh Lady Chiefs and Eagle's Landing
last week.
Fayette County was undefeated going into the tri-meet, but the Lady Chiefs
left as the victors.
McIntosh took an early lead in the first game, leading 14-2. Fayette County
fought back to pull the score to 14-8, but a collision at mid-court allowed
the winning point for the Chiefs to hit the floor untouched. The second
match was filled with long volleys, blocked shots and impressive digs
from both teams, but McIntosh won in the end 15-7.
"You can't score points if you don't get in serves," said Coach
Cheryl Laporte. "We have to serve at least 85 percent to beat McIntosh."
The Lady Tigers did win their next two games, defeating Eagle's Landing
15-3, 15-3. Ashley Stoll recorded three straight aces and Christine Pritchett
had strong blocking and net play to give the Lady Tigers the wins.
Fayette County then defeated East Coweta, 15-1 and 15-11, and then continued
to march toward a top region seed by defeating Newnan
and Forest Park. The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Cougars of Newnan 15-5
and 15-4 and then slammed Forest Park 15-1 and 15-2. Fayette County recorded
19 aces against Forest Park. The Lady Tigers will travel to play Paideia
and Wesleyan this Thursday.
Sandy Creek improved its record to 12-3 after finishing fifth in a tournament
in Alex City, Ala. The Lady Patriots faced quality teams from Alabama
and produced wins over Robert E. Lee High School and Jamison High School.
"It was the best we had played all year," said Coach James Slaton.
"The team has improved a lot and they are learning from the competition
that they faced." Sandy Creek faced Rockdale County and Union Grove
at Rockdale County last night and will travel to Banneker for matches
against Banneker and Stockbridge Thursday. The Lady Patriots are currently
3-0 in the region and will have a big quad meet next week at Creekside
against Creekside, Troup County and Woodward Academy.
The matches next week begin at 5 p.m. and should serve as a good indicator
of how the area meet will go.
