Patriots and Panthers get big wins

The atmosphere at the Fayette County - Starr's Mill football game last Friday night was electric.

Tiger Stadium was filled with fans from both sides and the noise often obscured the whistle on the field. That is, until Starr's Mill took Fayette County's fans completely out of the game, building a 24-0 lead by the half on their way to a 50-6 rout.

The first several drives for both teams were filled with miscues, not because the offense made mistakes but because both defenses were disruptive. Tony Tofanelli and Andrew Bashakus recorded several sacks for the Panthers and seemed to put a lot of pressure on Tiger quarterback Nathaniel Enloe. Drew Cofty scored the first touchdown for the Panthers and they never looked back.

Another key player for the Panthers was Reuben Houston. Houston had several huge runs, including one for a touchdown after an interception and an 85-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Starr's Mill (2-0) finally gets to play at home this weekend with a game against Newnan (1-0). Newnan's game with North Clayton was postponed due to a mysterious flooding of the school's field.

The Cougars will present another challenge for the Panthers, who seem to rise to the occasion each week. Fayette County (1-1) travels to face Evans (2-0) this Friday. The Tigers will be looking to rebound from a game with very few positives. Their first challenge will be staying up during the trek to Evans.

Sandy Creek (0-2) faced last year's AAA state champs, Oconee County, Saturday evening and won 13-12. The playing conditions were still sloppy, but the Patriots got good performances from every member of the defense, along with J.R. Lemon, quarterback Andre Green and Mark Lawson, to even out their record at 1-1.

The Patriots will get something of a breather this Friday night when they travel to Pickens (0-2). Though Pickens is a AAA opponent, Sandy Creek will stay focused and try to get its offense clicking on all cylinders.

Landmark Christian School (1-1) also evened out its record this Friday by defeating Madison
Academy, Ala., 20-0. The War Eagles got greta performances on offense from fullback Jim Gaddy, quarterback Daniel Solly, and halfbacks Chris Rentz and Sean Hill. Rentz scored two touchdowns, while Gaddy rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown. Solly had 87 yards rushing and a touchdown pass and Hill had 81 yards rushing on six carries. They also got great performances on defense from their defensive backs, including a key interception from Michael Watson.

Landmark will travel to face Athens Aacdemy (2-0) this Friday. Athens Academy, previously ranked eighth, defeated the seventh-ranked team Friday night and will put a lot of pressure on the War Eagles' defensive backs. "We just need to minimize turnovers and put pressure on their quarterback," said Coach Fred Gilkeson. "We didn't turn the ball over aginst Madison Academy and the team looked good. We need to stay physical this week, because it will be a physical game."

In other games over last weekend, East Coweta got its season underway and defeated Eagle's Landing 54-28. The Indians will host Forest Park this Friday night. The Northgate Vikings (2-0) got back on track this week with a 56-0 stomping of Union Grove (0-2). Northgate will host Carver, Atlanta (0-1) this Friday.

McIntosh (0-1), which had a bye last week, will travel to Tara Stadium in Jonesboro for a game against the Morrow Mustangs next Saturday afternoon.
