Stars on the Southern Crescent moves to a new venue

Now beginning its eighth season as the southside's longest-established and most popular coffee house, Stars on the Southern Crescent will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the LaFayette Educational Center (the old Fayette County High School) in Fayetteville.

With the band room converted into a coffee house venue boasting a raised stage, professional lighting and tables complete with tablecloths and candles, the event will feature the acoustic duo of Grubbs and Imes, who have appeared several times previously at Stars. Cary Grubbs and Carl Imes have been composing and making music together since their high school days in their hometown of Griffin.

They mix blues, gospel, folk and rock in their performance of original and traditional songs, accompanied by acoustic guitars and mandolin.

In addition, the coffee house will host performances by singer/actors Brian Turner and Bettina, accompanied by Martha Clarke. Turner and Bettina, who have both appeared in last winter's Scotland Road and in the summer's partici
patory musicals for children, will sing Broadway melodies and more.

LaFayette Educational Center is located at 205 LaFayette Avenue."We think there will be an advantage to having our shows and our coffee house events in the same space," said Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D. Steadman, who is artistic director of Offshoot Productions, which presents the coffee house, is especially enthusiastic about the ability to schedule a full season of coffee house dates at the this venue.

Doors open at 7:45 p.m., and the show begins at 8:15. Admission is $7 for the general public, and $5 for seniors and children under 12. Group rates and reserved tables for eight or more are available with payment in advance.

As has been the practice since the inception of the coffee house, patrons who bring their mugs from home are eligible for discounts on hot beverages and for the "most unusual mug" award. For additional information, call Offshoot at (770) 631-2362 or e-mail to offshootpr@aol.com.
