"An Evening of Fun With
Ludlow Porch" turned out to be just that.
The evening benefit was conducted by the Board of Directors of the Fayette
Youth Protection Home Inc.
Nearly 200 persons were in attendance, paying $75 each for the privilege
of hearing the famed radio personality and to contribute to a worthy cause.
The Jim Friday Home was built in 1989 to house children who were abused
or neglected until such time as they could return to a family or a foster
home. Nine years later the Asden Johnson Home was built and the two house
an average of 30 children. Unfortunately, more than 200 calls for assistance
are received in a year.
Clients of the homes are given as normal a life as possible, entering
Scout programs, Little League, etc. and have the desire to go to college.
Some of them serve as tutors to younger students. Occasionally there are
sets of siblings on hand and are able to comfort each other in their trying
times.
The children may stay from only a few days to several years.
Local well-known physician, author and humorist Dr. Ferrol Sams Jr. introduced
the speaker for the evening. "Sambo," as he is best known, and
his wife, Dr. Helen Sams, have a home in the mountains near Porch's home.
Bob Hanson, a.k.a. Ludlow Porch, was born on Pryor Street in Atlanta and
reared in East Point. In his life prior to becoming a radio personality,
he was a Marine, a boxer and an insurance adjuster.
For the past two decades he has been identified as a humorist, author
and radio personality.
Speaking for the evening without a fee, he said "Neighbor helping
neighbor - that's the American way. Being here this evening with you folks
and your efforts toward helping children makes me proud to be associated
with you.
