Big wins and tough losses for local teams in the first week of football

It has begun.

Friday night saw high school football action take place all over the state and the results for our local teams were mixed. Some of the football programs got their seasons off to a good start, while others still have many questions to answer.

The Fayette County Tigers (1-0) traveled down the road to face their rivals the McIntosh Chiefs (0-1). The Chiefs, under new head coach Butch Prosser, are hoping for a major change from the way the program had been going. They have a new offense, the Wing-T, and a new attitude. Unfortunately, the results on Friday were the same as ever. The Tigers got strong performances from tailbacks Drew Furey and Josh Davis and won by a score of 21-0. The two tailbacks combined for close to 200 yards rushing, helping the Tigers control the clock and the momentum.

There were a few bright spots for the Chiefs. They caused several turnovers and recovered two fumbles in the third quarter, including one by Rusty Stewart. Jim O'Shea and Eddie Smith also had several good plays, but couldn't get in the Tiger endzone.

Fayette County will host Starr's Mill this Friday, while McIntosh gets a bye week. They will travel to Tara Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16 for a day game against Morrow.

As for the Starr's Mill Panthers (1-0), they decimated Henry County (0-1) by a score of 45-6. The man on offense for the Panthers was Jason Laney. Laney rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Fuhrmann also provided some highlights for the Starr's Mill defense by recovering a fumble and scoring a touchdown. The defense played big for Starr's Mill, limiting the Warhawks to only six points and shutting down senior Rodney Brown.

Their game this Friday against the Fayette County Tigers will be an interesting one. The two teams are very similar to each other. They both rely on a strong running game and both have experienced and battle tested quarterbacks. Their defenses also come up big. This could be an intense matchup adding flames to this relatively new rivalry.

Sandy Creek (0-1) dropped to eighth place in the polls after losing to Shaw (1-0) by a score of 7-0. The game was chock full of great defensive plays, but Shaw got away with a touchdown and the win. Sandy Creek's offense, which is full of firepower, was limited to just 69 total yards in the loss. 45 of those yards came from J.R. Lemon, a top rated running back for the Patriots.

The Patriots will face Oconee County (0-1) this week. Oconee County fell to sixth place in the polls after losing to Thomas County by a score of 26-24. This will be a tough contest for Sandy Creek, but they will come out ready to prove their worth this week.

In other games played last Friday night, Landmark Christian School had a tough time contending with the Wesleyan Wolves, losing by a score of 24-0. The War Eagles (0-1) will host Madison County, Ala. this Friday night. The Northgate Vikings (1-0) edged out the Macon County Bulldogs, 7-0, last Friday night.

Dominique Partridge scored the touchdown for Northgate, which was ineffective on offense for the rest of the evening. The Vikings will travel to face Union Grove on Friday night. Union Grove lost to Eagle's Landing last week by a score of 54-10. East Coweta finally gets to start their season this Friday with a game at Eagle's Landing.

All kickoffs for this Friday are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
