Tyrone First Christian
to celebrate its 100th anniversary this Sunday
The First Christian Church
of Tyrone will celebrate its 100th anniversary this Sunday, Sept. 10,
with all-day activities including a fun run, worship service, special
music, and barbecue.
The church was first organized in August of 1900 under a makeshift brush
arbor in College Park near the current MARTA transit station. In 1966,
because of expansion of the airport, the congregation moved its facilities
to Old National Highway in South Fulton County. In 1994, the congregation
moved to its current location in Tyrone in order to be more accessible
to its membership.
This Sunday's activities will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a 100 Year Fun Run
which will begin at the College Park MARTA Station. Runners will proceed
through College Park,
down Old National Highway past the former facilities, past Christian City,
a ministry supported by First Christian since its inception, and on to
Jenkins Road in Tyrone, with runners expected to arrive about 9:30 a.m.
Morning worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include music by the
adult choir, a performance by the Christian Minstrels from Atlanta Christian
College, and singing by the congregation.
After the worship service, all are invited to stay for a barbecue lunch
on the grounds.
First Christian Church of Tyrone is located at 294 Jenkins Rd. For more
information about the day's activities, call the church at 770-969-7346.
