People are ignorant of U.S. history

The editorial comment by Dave Hamrick on the present state of our government is on target. He cites the belief by many that we have a democracy. That is false! We have a republic, as he states.
When Ben Franklin was leading the constitutional convention in 1787, he was asked by a bystander, what was accomplished. He replied, "We have given you a republic, if you can keep it." His last phrase should be a wake-up call to Americans today.
Sadly, I submit our schools have long abandoned teaching American history in a meaningful way. How many of our citizens are aware of the great suffering of those who fought and won our independence, starting in 1776? How many are aware of the words of the Declaration of Independence, or have read the Constitution?
Does anyone believe we could field a military effort now, as was done by the "greatest generation"?
We must restore meaningful teaching of American history in our schools.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance!
