Going into last weekend's Sandy Creek Invitational, the Lady Patriots softball team was 2-5.

The team returned seven starters from last year's squad and does not have a senior on the team. "They are getting better by the game," said Coach Tonya Carlisle, and it appears she is right. The Lady Patriots improved their record to 5-8 during the tournament, capturing second place in the silver medal round, and winning this week's regular season game against Jones County.

Their first game of the tournament was against Newnan. Jessica DeMooney went two for three at the plate and drove in a run, as did Sydney Sneed, who went two for two. Sandy Creek produced seven hits in the win. Teri Manthey gave up three hits and recorded the win for Sandy Creek and improved to 2-1 on the season.

In the next game, Sandy Creek lost to Sprayberry 4-1. DeMooney's inside-the-park home run was one of only three hits the Lady Patriots recorded. Pitcher Beth Jenkins got the loss, despite giving up only five hits. The Lady Patriots then played Fayette County and lost 4-1. Manthey got the loss, giving up
five hits. Chrissy Lunsford went two for three at the plate, hitting a double and stealing a base, while Meredith Lovelace drove in the only run.

Sandy Creek then faced Rockdale County and won 7-0. Carrie Rountree, Lunsford and DeMooney each had two RBIs, as the Lady Patriots produced 11 hits. Jenkins got the win, limiting Rockdale County to one hit. Sandy Creek won its next game as well, defeating Pike County 5-3. Rountree went three for three, driving in two runs, while Sneed went two for three, driving in three runs. Manthey got the win for Sandy Creek, improving her record to 3-2.

The final game of the tournament was against Woodward Academy. Sandy Creek gave up only seven hits, but committed six errors as well, as they lost 4-2. The team batting average is starting to climb, as more people are getting involved in the offense, but costly mistakes are still being made. Sandy Creek has not seen many of its region opponents on the field and should know what to expect the next time around.

In the Lady Patriots game against Jones County, Beth Jenkins, Lunsford and DeMooney each drove in a run in their 3-2 win. Manthey recorded the win, giving up two hits and striking out two batters.
