Fayette County softball team improves to 12-1, wins silver medal round of tournament

The Fayette County Lady Tiger softball team is young, made up of sophomores and three freshman. The team has played a lot together though and they come together more by the day. Currently, they have a record of 12-1, thanks to strong pitching and timely hitting.

Last week, they hosted their rivals the McIntosh Chiefs and won by a score of 2-0. Sophomore pitcher Bonnie Bynum pitched a complete game and also drove in the Lady Tigers first run. Megan Nichols, Paige Phillips and Becky Carter each went 1 for 2 at the plate.

After the game, Shannon Phillips, a former player for the Lady Tigers, signed with LaGrange College. Philips, a left fielder started for three years at Fayette County. She was a tremendous hitter, finishing first on the team inhits as a junior and second as a junior. She was also the MVP of the team in her junior season. Phillips made the GACA All Star team and her squad, the south squad, won both of their games.

“Shannon is just an extremely versatile player,” said Coach Jill Joiner. “She committed no errors as a senior, was a powerful hitter and is an all-around ball player.”

Phillips started school at LaGrange College this week.

Fayette County then played in the Sandy Creek invitational on Friday and Saturday, winning the silver medal round. They lost their first game to Salem, due to the International Tiebreaker Rule, by a score of 2-0. The rule states that if two teams are tied after seven innings, each team gets their last out on second base and must try to drive them home. The loss put Fayette County in the silver medal round.

The Lady Tigers then won their next four games by a combined score of 20-2. They defeated South Gwinnett, 2-1; beat Sandy Creek, 4-1; won over Pike County by a score of 6-0 and beat Rockdale County, 8-0. Bynum recorded all four wins in the tournament and had pitched a perfect game through seven innings in their loss. Nichols was the leading hitter for the Lady Tigers in the tournament. She went 8 for 16 at the plate and drove in three RBIs.

Fayette County will face Starr’s Mill at McCurry Park on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. McIntosh will travel to face North Clayton at 4:30 p.m.
