Sure Hooters is exploitative, but it's also just plain ugly

Of course, Hooters is sexist, although it may not be exploitative. In today’s job market, women can choose their own poison, at least in lower-echelon positions.

I would no sooner patronize Hooters than I would Cracker Barrel, which has a history of discriminating against gays. But that doesn’t mean I should try to force anyone other than my mealtime companions to follow my personal principles.

This is America, which — like it or not — means the marketplace will ultimately decide. Every dollar you spend at an establishment is a vote, so I suggest you use your dollars wisely.

While I can’t protest plans for a Hooters in Fayetteville on moral grounds, I do have a grave concern (other than the potential traffic problem). The architecture the chain uses is typically unimaginative and the garish orange color scheme is unsuitable for the vista I hope we’re trying to create in Fayette.

In short, Hooters may be attractive inside but it sure is ugly outside.
If it is eventually approved, our leaders must be sure that the outer structure — the only part I’ll ever see — meets the aesthetic standards of this community.
