United Way sets record goal

United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, which includes Fayette County, launched this year’s campaign with a record goal of $82.5 million.

The campaign theme, “A New U,” centers on how a new United Way helps the community invest in solutions to the issues citizens care about most.

“When a donor gives to United Way, he or she does so much more than support one charity or cause. This campaign is about a community pulling together resources to meet a common goal,” said United way president Mark O’ Connell.

According to O’Connell, United Way has a plan in place, with measurable strategies for addressing the root causes of crime, breaking the cycle of violence and working to ensure basic human needs are met.

The community plan focuses United Way investments in five key areas: nurturing children and youth, strengthening families, increasing economic self-sufficiency, encouraging citizen involvement and meeting basic needs.
